5 Parenting Skills From Your Parents

Some key parenting tips that your parents recited over and over again to you probably stuck in your head. They were also pretty straightforward and common sense.

1. Don't Talk Back
It was simple, in public children were meant to be seen, not heard. Tantrums were not allowed and were immediately reprimanded. Children were taught to respect their elders, and when a slip of the tongue occurred to their parents, they knew they'd done something wrong. A part of great parenting skills is letting your child know it is unacceptable to speak to any one in a rude way, or say mean things about anyone else.

2. Close Your Mouth
Close your mouth when you chew your food. It's all about manners. Chomping your food, or guzzling your entire meal down, was considered rude. Talking with your mouthful was an absolute no. It would be good to ensure the entire family eats at the kitchen table together for meals, and that the family has fun conversations with each other.

3. Give Me a Kiss and Hug
Affection was probably important to your parents. They didn't coddle, they hugged you. If something didn't go your way, you were given a kiss and a hug, told how to take care of it and did. Your parents did not let you sit in their lap when you were six, because you didn't like not being the center of attention.

4. Wash Your Hands
Proper hygiene was expected. You washed your hands before dinner, one to prevent unwanted germs from contaminating the kitchen, and also out of respect over the time your mom put into the meal. Your children should shower or bathe daily and brush their teeth at least twice a day. Brush your children's hair and change their clothes when they get dirty.

5. Go Play In The Mud
Playing in the mud was so much fun! After a rain, in the dirty mud, you could play with your brothers and sisters and make mud pies, and pretend you were baking them for your mom, or little brother. You would even find the occasional worm and stick it in the mud to serve to your little sister. Then she would cry. It is still fine for children to play in the mud, just make sure they get all clean before they come inside the house.
